Topic Up For Discussion: Best TV Show Ever-- "South Park" (duh)

Okay, well the half-season premiere for my favorite show of all time is just one week away. I've been stoked for the beginning of new "South Park" episodes since late April or early May of this year. I'm happy they've started again. So, I wanted to take a moment and write a little entry about "South Park", and not in the obsessive way I usually carry on about it; this is a cereal serious entry.

There are many reasons why "South Park" is my favorite television ever, but I want to actually to think about the specifics of it. What makes "South Park" so great?
Reason 1- Many people have a hard time believing I learn actual life lessons from this show. But I'm serious. Half the episodes consist of some “Coming of Age” experience(as I like to put it) for the boys, concluding with Kyle(and occasionally Stan) closing off the episode with the infamous “You know, I learned something today.” speech. To be honest, there have been a couple of occasions where one of the characters makes a complete valid point, and makes me think, “That is so true.”
Reason 2- It's one of the best TV shows to accurately parodize modern pop-culture, politics, and everything else that you know everyone's thinking, but don't have the guts to make fun of. Great examples are “South Park Is Gay”, making fun of the metro-sexual trend in 2003, “Manbearpig”, poking fun at Al Gore and his obsession with Global Warming, and two recent ones, “The Ring”parodizing the Jonas Brothers, and “Fishsticks”, hilariously ridiculing Kanye West and his ego.
Reason 3- It's just funny! Some jokes aren't as well thought as some of the extended gags in some of their more epic episodes, but no matter what, I laugh my ass off watching that show. It's great.

Before I start rambling, I want to write a few things about the characters. I only have space for the four main ones, and hey, that's all people care about, anyway.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN.
StanStan: Stan is probably my second favorite character. People give him crap, for being the “everyman” of the group, and not having any traits that really make him “stand out”. I completely disagree, though. Stan reminds me so much of myself, so I kind of have this relation to him, so of course he's a favorite. He's a free thinker, like me, and along with his skepticism, and hate for hypocrisy, he totally strikes me as a different, boy version of myself. He seems to always get in trouble for speaking his mind, and is the only one to bring a sane voice to a crazy situation. He's great because even though he's a fourth grader with a potty mouth, he totally has deeper thoughts than most adults I can think of. So, kudos for Stan, my second favorite. Great “Stan” episodes are: “Trapped In The Closet”, “Raisins”, “Woodland Critter Christmas”, and “Douche and Turd”.

KyleKyle: Well, Kyle is a character I'm kind of so-so with. He has his moments, but over-all, he doesn't stand out too much to me. Although, his hat is enviable, and I want one.
Kyle is the “smart” one in the group, and like Stan, hates hypocrisy and lies. He's generally kind spirited, but will give you a pretty kick-ass comeback if you diss him. I'm a little like him in that way. Other than that, he's not really my favorite character, but he's not a least favorite either. There are, however, some great “Kyle” episodes I enjoy a lot. They are: “Jewbilee”, “Passion of the Jew”, and “Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo”.

CartmanCartman: Okay, let's get it clear; the show would not be the show without Cartman. You could hate him, because he's just so racist, intolerant, and just all around a complete dick, but Cartman is probably the most important character. He's the most recognized all over the world over the rest of the characters, and has some of the most memorable quotes and moments(i.e. “Respect mah authoritay!”, “Nooo, kitty, this is my pot-pie!”, etc.). Cartman, as I said, makes the series. He's hilarious, and tells it as it is. He's often extremely racist, especially towards Jews, and intolerant. If you knew a real person like this, you'd hate them, but somehow Cartman is loved by everyone. I won't deny it, Cartman is a great character, possibly one of the most developed and thought-out characters out of the whole cast. The best “Cartman” episodes are: “Cartmanland”, “The Death of Eric Cartman”, “Scott Tenorman Must Die”, and “Cartman's Mom Is A Dirty Slut/Cartman's Mom Is Still A Dirty Slut”.

KennyKenny: Ahhh, Kenny. My favorite character. Ever. There are just so many reasons why I love Kenny, and it would take too long to list them all. His description will be longer than everyone else's because he's my favorite and I have a lot to say.
When one first starts to watch the series, Kenny is a rather mysterious character, who often stays quiet and in the background, getting little onscreen action. I mean, for one, you never see the kid's face, so that has to add to his mysteriousness, not to mention to fact you can't understand him(well, I can, and some other people can too, but...). Once you've started to watch a little longer, you learn he is incredibly poor, and well, incredibly perverted also. There are some great moments where his perverted nature shows. For example, in “Lil' Crime Stoppers”, when the little girl is describing the physical appearance of her lost doll to Kenny, their “sketch artist”, and instead of writing what she says, he just produces a stick figure with huge circles where her chest should be. When Kenny exposed the sketch, the other boys exclaim, “Aww, dude! That's disgusting! Go put that away!”, so Kenny walks to a section of the room, with a bulletin board entitled “Kenny's Most Wanted”, which consists of just a huge collection of drawings of breasts.
As I said before, he doesn't get much screen time, so when a “Kenny” episode comes, it just makes it all the more special, and you can tell they're often more thought out. Kenny is a wonderful character, and most people just over look him. Oh yeah, I forgot the most obvious thing about him. His deaths.
The catch phrase “Oh My God, They Killed Kenny; You Bastards!” is known wildly in pop-culture, and almost everyone gets that reference. "South Park" is the only show that can continually kill a character and make sense. They killed him off for the entire sixth season, but he was still important throughout the season, and even had an episode revolved around him and his death, “Ladder To Heaven”. When Cartman swallows his ashes thinking it's chocolate milk mix, Kenny's soul is inside of him, so Cartman would frequently have sudden interjections where Kenny is speaking inside of him. Ever since they brought Kenny back, they've stopped killing him in every episode, but he'll still die once in a while. Him dying not as often makes it more effective and satirical when he does, because you don't see it coming. His other deaths in the older seasons are also pretty creative, and unsuspecting, too.
Best “Kenny” episodes are: “The Ring”, “How To Eat With Your Butt”, “Major Boobage”, and “Cartman Joins NAMBLA”(well, it's not all about Kenny, but he plays a prominent part in the episode, and he's excellent in this one).

That concludes my blog dedicated to "South Park". Again, I'm so excited for the new episodes and I'm sure "South Park"'s going to be around for a while, a big part of modern culture, and as one of the greatest animations of all time.
